Visiting Mitla in Oaxaca was an incredibly beautiful experience. The site is full of history, intricate designs, and stories that make you appreciate the depth of Oaxaca’s past. Walking through the ancient structures and seeing the detailed stonework up close felt surreal.
If you love history, archaeology, or simply want to experience one of Oaxaca’s most meaningful cultural sites, Mitla is a must-visit. I highly recommend it.

Get a guide when you arrive, ask what they cost, what knowledge they have and for how long will the tour be. There are usually a few tourguides waiting near the ticket booth. Shop around and get one you are happy with.
It's better to have a guide to tell you what you are looking at.

A definite must see and definitely their one of the local guides who are there to assist…ours was Gilberto and his English was excellent…about a 40 min tour…be aware the main beautiful palace building has very tall steps to get up and down…gorgeous cactus gardens, tons of handicrafts on location and throughout the village streets that wind up to the site

Interesting small ruin. Small. Right in the town, easy to get to. Church built right into the property, which is interesting. I've seen it a couple of times, interesting place. Can't go down into the tombs right now, they're renovating. Colours are unique, and the columns are fascinating. Related to the site down the road at Yagul.

As much as I wanted to support the local community, hiring an English-speaking guide on-site was a poor decision. The tour cost an additional 400 pesos on top of the ticket price, but the guide, Misa, gave a very generic tour with zero passion. Although he mentioned the tour would last about 40 minutes, he only gave us 20 minutes of his time; I actually learned more from ChatGPT after the tour ended.
