The Temple of San Juan de Dios is recognized as the first church built in the city in the 16th century, where the first Mass was celebrated in 1521. Initially, it was an adobe chapel with a thatched roof dedicated to Saint Catherine. After serving as the provisional seat of the diocese, it was rebuilt with brick and tile. After an earthquake in 1662, the Juanine monks rebuilt it in 1699, adding a hospital and convent. In 1864, a fire destroyed it, and it was rebuilt and consecrated again in 1890
