I was barely aware of this monument until I climbed up Calton Hill years ago and found half a Parthenon sitting here. An icon of Remembrance of soldiers fallen past and present, it’s a fitting, solemn stone. The bitter disputes that underlie the founding of the Monument are almost as fascinating the the structure itself - as one academic paper writes, “The twelve Doric columns stand as witnesses to ambition, patriotism, love of the arts, respect for classical Greece, meanness, and quarrelsomenes
