One of the most famous squares in the region and one of the most famous and well recognized attractions in Cairo, El-Tahrir Square is an icon for the resilience of the Egyptian people.
The square was first established in 1867, it was originally called "Ismailia Square", after the 19th-century ruler of Egypt, Khedive Ismail, who commissioned the new downtown district's 'Paris on the Nile'. After the Egyptian Revolution of 1919, the square became widely known as Tahrir (Liberation) Square.

I could not spend time in Cairo without seeing Tahrir Square. It's a great space with some interesting buildings such as the old Egyptian Museum and the government building that is being converted into a Marriott Hotel.
We encountered several helpful people who were only too anxious to help us navigate the Square and its shops.

Famous for the Arab spring. The monument in the middle is guarded by security. I also saw a monument to the General who organized the resistance to Napoleon's invasion in the late 18th century.

An important and significant landmark in Cairo and as a matter of fact in Egypt. A memorial place for the 2011 uprising. You are not allowed on to the monument itself but can enjoy it from a distance. No pedestrian crossings so best to observe from afar or take extra caution when crossing the road. It is very close to the old Egyptian museum.

A truly wonderful place for a peaceful walk, where you can fully take in the surroundings without distractions. I highly recommend visiting on Friday mornings when the streets are empty.. no cars, no crowds just a serene, open space where you can breathe, unwind, and enjoy the quiet beauty of downtown Cairo. It’s the perfect time to experience it at its best.
