This church is different from most in Lisbon. In 1959, a large fire destroyed the roof and many wooden parts. The heat was so strong that the stone columns cracked and turned black. You can still see the damage today. The church was not fully restored on purpose. The scars were left as a reminder of what happened, instead of being hidden. It is simple, quiet, and very powerful — a place that shows history exactly as it is.
