The heart of Bariloche, the civic center is a public plaza. Constructed in 1940, the cobbled plaza is bounded by stone and log buildings housing the Municipality of Bariloche (the one with the clock tower), the city library, a museum and the city post office.
At the center of the plaza is the equestrian statue of General Julio Argentino Roca, military leader and statesman. He served 2 terms as President of Argentina, for a total of 12 years, apparently the longest serving president.
