Carlton hill was formed by volcanic activity during the ice ages. In the 1400s during first signs of civilization, the hill was used for hosting medieval tournaments and festivities, and in 1600s was actually a site for public executions. Today it is a public park with a number of pretty monuments - Nelson monument, national monument of Scotland and dulgart steward monument. From the hill, one can see the beautiful Edinburgh skyline.
