What a beautiful site! Currently a working archeological site, it is good to visit here with an archeologist that is familiar with Mixtec and Zapotec history and archeology, as this is the site of a Zapotec royal family complex, dating back to between 500 BC and 850 AD.
We toured with a group, organized by Oaxaca Lending Library and led by a local archeologist. Bravo!

Amazing architecture. Similar to those in Yucatan as far as size. Lots of walking and you're able to stand on and touch the buildings. Be prepared for the sun and lots of steep steps. Definitely recommend!

Such a cool & wonderful historically cultural experience . . . and it is FREE & beautiful! Really Interesting how Atzompa tied into Monte Albán, visible & just a few hills away! I had the place to myself! Must 👀!

A real unexpected find. This recently reopened counterpart to Monte Alban is smaller but also WAY less crowded at under 50 visitors per day on average. We took a taxi from downtown Oaxaca and back for 500 pesos, the site itself is admission free. Ride up takes about 30 minutes. The site has great views, good signage and is very relaxed without the vendors and tour groups. If you have some time this is a really nice morning spent off the beaten track.

Thought to be where Zapotec nobility lived. Not Mont Alban but worth a visit as it is empty of other people and the views are stunning. Difficult to get to and can be very difficult to leave -- be sure you have a plan for a taxi to pick you up.
