Peaceful and welcoming place up in the mountains. First notice the very fine Venetian marble fountain to the left of the entrance. The modest-looking church contains highly remarkable frescoes, some dating from the 16th century.

One of the most impressive monasteries. The atmosphere is magnificent. Even if you are not very religious, you feel the energy of nature, mountains, ancient church. It's Crete itself.

To the monastery you need to get on the serpentine. Beautiful views around. Before the entrance is a fountain remaining from the Roman period. The monastery itself is chamber, there are not many tourists. Before the entrance is a fountain left over from the Roman period. In the courtyard of the monastery is a very cozy, quiet atmosphere.

The Vrontisi Monastery in the south of Crete dates back to the 14th century when Crete was under Venetian rule (1205–1669). The monastery, also called the monastery of Ayios Antonios, was once surrounded by fortified walls, but not much of that remains. The monastery is now mainly defined by the stately entrance building, the church, two enormous plane trees and, last but not least, a beautiful marble fountain from the Venetian period. Monastery as usual, I guess. But the most interesting thing is that the crab lives there! In the tree! I wouldn't believe that if I wouldn't saw that with own eyes. There is a spring and an old fountain. Next to them grows big tree with a hollow. The crab lives in that hollow, in a splash of water.
