I saw a horrific documentary about this on YouTube from WTTW..... history way before my time. But after watching I had to go stand on its grounds and see for myself. And you get a lot of history here too just from reading the plaques. I love how they honor all those that's fallen. And FYI.... A little fun fact and a little off topic....but I found it a little bizarre and interesting that Viennas beef is only a short distance away.....which I couldn't help but stop by while I was in the area.

The air here is dense with history, thicker than the jungle, but this white building on the corner, what's going on in there? Why the heavy steel shutters? I'm taller than the average bear you know, I can see thru the perforations , I see the aisles of salvaged limestone borders that once lined the tops of those buildings, what are they doing? I demand answers! This is our city , you shouldn't hide us from ourselves. I'm just going to go in myself. I don't care what they say, i hear it all

If you're a fan of Chicago History, including that of the labor movement and the role of firefighters in the Greatest City in the World, this area is must-see.

It was a short and sweet place to visit. It was very tidy, and there were places to rest as well. My only concern is that the statue and landmark present at the Gates pertain to the firemen who have lost their lives in Chicago, and while that is very important, it would seem more fitting for there to be a statue dedicated to those that lost their lives while working at the Stockyards. Also, commercial trucks would loudly roll by every once in a while.
