Bergen Cathedral (Domkirken) is a powerful piece of history tucked away just a short walk from the busy harbor. Unlike the more colorful parts of town, this stone cathedral has a solemn, enduring atmosphere. The interior is beautiful in its simplicity, with high vaulted ceilings and stunning stained glass. The real highlight for history buffs is on the outside: if you look closely at the upper part of the tower’s stone wall, you can still see a cannonball embedded there from a 1665 naval battle!

We went to Bergen on Christmas eve and there was a carol service about to start. Everyone was dressed up, men old and young wearing suits and women very smartly dressed, some in National costume, puts us Brits to shame. The atmosphere was tremendous and we were made very welcome. Although we didn't understand a word, we used Google translate with the order of service which helped. First carol was O come all ye Faithful which of course we sang along to.

Truly imposing and beautiful medieval cathedral dedicated to the "national saint" St. Olaf. First mentions of the church is from late 12th century, though it was about a previous building, that has burned down. The cathedral was consecrated around year 1250.

During the centuries, the cathedral has been renovated several times, usually because it has been damaged in a fire; ut has burned down several times. The latest time was it was renovates was in the 1880's.

A beautiful simple cathedral. We were lucky enough to have been there when an ensemble was rehearsing. They were singing some contemporary work and the acoustics were brilliant. There is no charge to enter and a great place to sit and contemplate for a while.
