Nice monastery, very peaceful and a delightful lime and pomegranate garden. Would recommend it for praying a little bit. Not really appropiate for tourists only. It is an active monk community and, at least me, felt bad disturbing their peace for just having a look around.

Nice monastery in the hills. Pretty easy to get up to - we went in big taxi. Quiet, pretty church, lush trees, gardens. Sadly a bit of earthquake damage. Museum and shop were closed.

Free admission to the monastery and church. Doesn't seem to get busy, so it is possible to enjoy the peace and retiring tranquillity of the entire site. Sadly, we didn't see any monks unless they were disguised like tourists. Also, no plain clothed monkey business or monkeying around, which would have left monk clues.

Agarathos is one of the oldest monasteries in Crete, and one of the most beautiful. As you can see from the photos, the interior of the church is magnificent, but the surroundings and location are as impressive. Located a bit off the beaten path, the monastery is actually not so for from the beaches East of Heraklion, and some amazing nature. A must see, really.
